Today we got the sort of big news from Riot team on the number of teams qualifying for the World Finals, the date and the venue. Since everyone is talking about the later I won't spend time on that (in case you are inside a bubble or something the whole thing will be kicking off October 7th and will take place on the Staples Center (if you are under the surface even more that is one of the most (if not the most) iconic places of Los Angeles in terms of sports and shows)) but I will talk about the distribution of the spots, a case that Montecristo (twitter.com/ggcmontecristo/) (who else other than him) made me think about.
The spots are divided as it follows:
3 spots for NA and EU.
3 spot for KR (there were 2 spots but they won the All-Star so they got the extra team).
2 from CN and SEA (don't count TPA in imo).
1 from the winner of the International Regions tourney.
Do you see anything there that is really a mistake? Well if you do not, both Montecristo and I do.
Let these thoughts sink in to understand my point. First of all let's talk about the extra spot number, what if NA or EU had won the All-Star? 4 teams of any of those regions would be qualifying, that was not going to be fair with the region that has proved to be arguably the best on League Of Legends (Korea in case you still are under the surface).
Korean scene has proven to be the best of the best, but that doesn't mean that Riot should give them 4 or 6 spots (otherwise it would be a much more lucrative OGN championship). Although the region should have 3 spots default (hence a rightful 4th for the All-Star) to be somewhat fair with such an amazing scene.
EU is a region that counts with too many countries to be represented, so 3 spots is a fair number as a default. NA on the other hand has proven to be the weakest (by a long shot) of all regions (I even believe that international regions team will do better than all NA teams) and they represent two countries, 2 spots should be the default number, leaving other for the international regions who represents literally all of the above.
The format should be 4 groups of 4, no byes (who would approve that, for example, the FIFA would give Spain a bye for the Ro16 on the World Cup?). Taking you to the football reference, FIFA removed the right of auto qualifying to the next World Cup that the current champion had, because they need to prove to be worthy of the title to re-qualify.
Riot should give some thoughts to the NA spots for S4, sure the company love its country but they have to respect the level of play and the number of countries represented on each region.
Korean scene is die hard and balls of steel fight for the top but still is only one country. Even though we all love to see the plays, we also would love teams from our countries to be represented and root for them even if they are murdered by other teams. If not, what is the point of calling it World Finals?
